Local Food Strategies LLC

Alan, R. Hunt, Ph. D., Owner & Principal

Alan R. Hunt, Ph. D., is passionate about policy, research, communications, coalition-building, and stakeholder engagement to further local, regional, and sustainable food systems. Growing up on his family’s farm in New Jersey, he experienced the outdoors at a time of rapid farmland development. He pursued a BS in Environmental Studies at Bates College, in Maine, and while on a junior year abroad in England encountered his first farmers market in 2002. He was inspired by farmers markets for their potential to form community, generate farm income, and help preserve farmland. With this vision, he laid a course to focus his undergraduate thesis and Masters degree on the topic. Newly graduated from Duke University with a degree in Environmental Economics and Policy, Alan began professional work in Washington DC on a 4-year farm bill coalition, and led policy on local food, food access, and rural development. Ever curious about policy process, Alan became a Fulbright Scholar and earned a PhD in Rural Development from Newcastle University, UK. He returned to the farm in 2013, and is working to bring it back to economic viability after skipping a generation. Alan consults through Local Food Strategies LLC and provides advice on the farm bill, local food systems, and food access.
